It's Oh So Quiet

Now that I have approx. one month left until our first attempt at this baby game...all of my (what seemed like) small weird habits have been coming to the surface lately at work. Yes, I have been taking OPK's around my bigO date at work, but its not been until this last month that have I been taking more than one each day. Wait. I'm not giving you, lovely reader, enough of a backstory here.

Chefy and I own a very awesome and very SMALL restaurant that manages (thankfully!) to get extremely busy most times (think 1.5 hour wait on the weekends). That means that Chefy, myself, and the 7 staff we have working on any given day are working in what many might consider very small quarters. These quaint accomodations lead to a kind of necessary intimacy one may not expect from a work environment. Add to this that Chefy and I are the bosses, which means that our staff (and many of the customers on Chefy's part anyway) are watching our every move. This makes it, um, tricky to keep secrets from our staff. We are very familial and close with the people that work for us. This has for me, led to some creative and interesting situations/conversations lately, as of course we are keeping out TTC under wraps. Today was especially challenging interesting.

I lied at least four different times today. Once was about why I am going to accupuncture. Once was about why I was drinking the special tea I brought to work. Once was about why I'm quitting drinking at home. And the fourth was about why I've changed my diet. Thank goodness I'm not bad at lying. At least when it's not important.
But. The most interesting challange that has been brought forth with all this TTC work (cuz let's face it, it is work) is taking my OPK two/three times a day. As mentioned previously, our restaurant is small. I have managed to store my pee cup and a few OPK strips in the shoddy medicine cabinet in the bathroom the customers don't use. I have also managed to use said pee cups sucessfully for a couple months now, but I swear our dishwasher knows something is up. He can hear just about everything that goes on in that bathroom (it's under construction), and he must see me exiting the bathroom cradeling a small stick which I place on a shelf not 2 feet from him and then check again five minutes after going to the bathroom. This guy (our beloved dishwasher), is awesome and smart enough not to mention anything, but I know he knows something is up.  Crazy. I keep wondering if he goes home at night and tells his wife I've been taking pregnancy test every months for the past four months. Who knows??

I know you all may have experienced different levels of secrecy around your TTC process (and about different things), so bring it on. I want to hear about all of the weird, insane, sad, happy, strange, unusual, unpredictable (or not) moments that have risen from all of the things we keep to ourselves during this process. What do we go through in our secret lives? Post in comments or write a post of your own..

  1. Hilarious..Im not a big drinker but am generally known to have a glass of wine with dinner. My standard "why Im not drinking" line is that i have developed bad heartburn, which is pretty lame but was recently used by a male friend so i figured if it was good enough to be true, then that worked for me. W and I tried to do the whole, glass swap thing at dinner with my parents over xmas, it was a complete disaster. Who are we fooling..

Im lucky that a have a co-conspiritor at work who can help hide any of my odd behavior at the office. That all said, I do think I hit an all time high/low (?) when I drove my unwhitting carpool to work with the tank strapped in the middle seat. It had to be upright, meaning that they had to sit around it. I made up some very lame excuse about it being a fragile package (true!) that I needed to ship (somewhat true). It was pretty awkward, but they were all too polite to comment..

Anyways, good luck! its funny, sometimes we think we are so obvious, but unless someone knows whats going on, its actually pretty subtle.

  2. I went out with coworkers during my first TWW and I was sneaking club sodas and pretending they were my regular drink, ketel & soda. Oh what a tangled web we weave.

E, I love the story about the tank!

I've pretty much lost track of who I've told that we want to have babies. It didn't seem like a big deal to talk about it years ago before we had started trying and now it's just kind of the elephant in the room.

I know the one person I keep updated at work happens to also be my department chair, which is helpful. I know the clerk in charge of attendance/payroll has got to wonder about all my late arrivals due to medical procedures. I wonder if they think I'm dying? I have a student teacher this semester. She must be wondering, too.

I actually forgot a pee stick in the teacher bathroom a few months ago. I stopped laying them on the counter after that and started putting them in my purse. I didn't start doing them more than once a day until my first TTC cycle, though. :)

Ah well. Let the one-month countdown begin for you, Lib & Chefy. Can't wait for you guys to start!

  3. Good Luck, Libb! I am so excited for you guys. I am talking to my RE tomorrow about timing the trigger for 40H before insem, which would mean I'll be shooting up at work! Luckily we have a unisex single bathroom that I think I will be able to go in without arousing too much interest (other than, "Oh, K is gonna take a stinky dump.") But your workspace sounds especially challenging-- wait until you have to navigate your way around that space with a big ol' baby bump!

  4. Hi! I just came across your blog and am now all caught up so far. I just wanted to say hi and good luck with the rest of TTC preparations. I told a lot of people when we were first TTCing, so now that it's taken awhile I'm back tracking and making up stories about acupuncture, why I'm not drinking, etc. I'm excited to keep following your story!
