Fun with ultrasound pictures!

Just for fun, here are some sequential u/s pics that I've been collecting over the past few weeks. I've finally gotten around to scanning them. We'll go sequentially from smallest to largest. This first one is at 6-ish weeks. Just barely making a mark. In fact, the embryo is almost completely covered by the measurement line:
Moving onto 9-ish weeks, we can see arm buds! (kind of)
And finally, the latest u/s is from my NT scan three days ago. Baby is measuring 3 days AHEAD of schedule at 12w6d, which puts me currently at 13w2d today,  and everything looks great. Russian lady u/s tech showed me everything: stomach, arms, legs, kidneys, toes, fingers, nose...the whole shebang. She kept repeating "Beautiful....beautiful."  After asking twice whether or not I wanted to know the sex of the baby, she says..."So I can tell you now if you'd like to know, but you don't want to know, so..." I was silently freaking lying on that puffy long bed-thingy. I had NO IDEA that she would be able to see the sex at this stage. Crazy. I didn't find out, and Chefy was mad she missed the appointment, b/c she really wants to know. Heartbeat is 163bpm, nuschal fluid was within normal range, and the little one was moving and stretching, s/he is a very active little person inside of there, thrilling the hell out of me. Here's some profile pics; s/he did a 180 while the tech was taking pictures, just to make sure we got both profiles. Cutie.
And from the left....I think this is her/his best side.....

Good times. I am so bloated still that I look about 5 months already, which is forcing me to tell people sooner than later. But what are you going to do? I'm thrilled and just trying to enjoy every minute. In more feeling good news, my MS has finally eased up. No more constant nausea! It's great. I actually am feeling a lot more normal. I had almost forgotten what that felt like.

So Happy New Year to all, and congrats Shroe and Speedy on their new arrival Jonas! It's been amazing to watch their entire journey from beginning to end and celebrate with them. Congrats family!!

Congrats Ruby and Rose!!!

These two amazing mama's gave birth to their son Grayson this morning in the wee hours. What a lucky kid to be born to these two-he's gonna have all the love and fun a kid could have. Kudos new family!! How exciting.

Here in SF things are seemingly fine. Week 10 has been tough-lots of nausea (and subsequent eating to abate said nausea), indigestion, BLOATING in an extreme way, and exhaustion, to name a few. I am still wrapping my head around being this pregnant, while my body is letting me know 24/7. Good stuff.

Many happy holiday wishes to everyone. Congratulations to all the new mamas and mama's-to-be!

10 weeks

Had another u/s last Monday, and the bean (as our midwife called the wee thing), is looking good. No heartbeat measurements or doppler (I forgot to even ask), but the midwife says everything is looking great. The heartbeat again was insane to see, and we actually saw the thing kind of wiggle and flip. That was crazy. So who knows what will happen, we are not out of the woods, but so far so good.

Next u/s is not until Jan 4, at which I will be at 13 weeks, end of the first trimester, baby. Then I will breathe. And relax. A lot. Until (as everyone informs me), there will be plenty of other things to begin worrying about. Symptoms are still crazy, but the nausea has calmed down. That, or I've realized that I need to eat about every two hours in order to not feel like puking. So all is well. Thank goodness for the holidays as the best distraction.

On a endnote, I have been more in a place where I can catch up on everyone's blogs and feel a bit more a part of this community, and it has been a pleasure.

Moving along...

I'll get right to it: ultrasound results found a heartbeat! My first out of three pregnancies. Chefy and I watched that crazy little thing thump thump on that screen and it was amazing. Things are measuring well, so says my midwife, so I am happy. I am a bit confused on this LMP vs. ovulation day dating. I ovulated 4 days earlier than usual this month, so I think I should have been 7w1d at the ultrasound, whereas my midwife calls it 6w6d. The embryo was at 6w5d which my midwife says is right on target. I'm a bit confused. I understand the LMP, but then if I know I O'd 4 days earlier (or so), then isn't the thing measuring 4-5 days behind? I have a decision to make on this one: I can worry about it endlessly, or I can go with what my midwife says, and be happy. She counted the heartbeat at 140bpm. approx, and said that everything is looking great. I have been siding with her, and not worrying. This one has been a pokey-joe anyway, from not having any symptoms before the BFP, to no pole at 6w u/s....so I'm not going to panic. It's just taking its own sweet time. Baby. Or something like it.

I can't believe it. Part of me is feeling so content, so satisfied to have made it this far. This is the most pregnant I've been. And another part of me is thinking as I write that line... god I hope I don't regret writing about this excitement. What if it's just another letdown. I count 39 days until 13w, which seems almost manageable. Let's hope it passes quickly and painlessly.

Speaking of symptoms....another factor helping me not to panic is the horrible nausea I've been experiencing. It started a couple of weeks ago and has steadily intensified since then. I haven't vomited, but I think that's only because I abhor throwing up. I hate it with a passion. At first, I felt sick only in the morning and at night. Lately, that icky feeling has been creeping in on my afternoons. I feel like I'm walking through waves of nausea for most of the day. Last night was the worst. I almost started crying. My lovely wife has been feeding me regularly, and I'm trying to eat some form of protein once every two hours. This helps keep things manageable to the point where I can be sane. Competing with the nausea is the consistently strong metallic taste in my mouth. What a combo. Yum.

My apologies again for not writing more, or with any amount of clarity or panache (for lack of a better word). At this point, all I can do is just get it out there, in whatever form. There's been a lot going on in the last three months, so much it feels daunting to sit down and type it all out. Thanks for the support while I sort myself, my grief about the miscarriages, and basically the mess that is this TTC experience, out.

Scared

So....it turns out I'm pregnant again. This is my third pregnancy for 2010, and so far I have one for each season; spring pregnancy in March, summer pregnancy in June, and now a fall pregnancy in October. Here are the details:
  • femara cd 3-7.
  • no IUI's this round, instead 4 vials at home, 2 for each of the 2 at-home insems.
  • positive hpt's on 12dpo.
  • 1st beta 40 on 13dpo, 2nd beta 99 on 15dpo. Doubling rate of 34 hours. Progesterone is 28.8.
  • 1st u/s this last Thursday at 6w, showing perfect yolk and gestational sacs, but no fetal pole. Midwife tells me she sees 50% of fetal poles at this point. I of course am terrified and think she is just being nice.
First, my apologies for not writing about this sooner. My emotional state has lately been anything but stable. Also, my apologies for looking like an a**hole for complaining about this process. I know I have been lucky to get pregnant easily, it's just that these miscarriages have left me incredibly depressed and entirely unraveled. I feel like I'm standing on quicksand. I'm not sure I will be able to get through another miscarriage. I am completely unable to relax or enjoy the fact that I am pregnant. I am living in a state of uncertainty and fear. My symptoms come and go, causing me continued anxiety. One day my breasts will be searing with pain, the next...nothing. I am stressed and anxious beyond belief. Most days I have no idea how I'll get through this.

I did have an early pregnancy appointment with this lovely queer midwife,  who talked about all the work and disappointment I've gone through as all part of my preparation for being a parent. I realize that I have not been accepting this pregnancy at all, and that all I can see it as is yet another miscarriage. At this point, I'm just trying to get through each day.

Who knows what will happen. My next ultrasound is next Thursday, Nov 18. I try to breathe, in and out, and just get through the moment. That's all I can do.

10.15.2010

Well Well

Back again. Not for good, just to vent a bit and clear my head. I am in, it still seems, a bad place.

Now, please don't think for a second that I am a perpetually negative person. I am a realist, yes, but can almost always see a positive and am often a well-adjusted, happy and satisfied little human being.

In the past year, I have become someone else. I am so freaking sad and discouraged and depressed so much of the time. I can't seem to shake all the downward energy that is pulling me further and further into the deep dark hole of this f*cked up process. I don't know how those of you out there who have struggled with this managed to make it through. It seems impossible sometimes to me just to make it through each long, tiring day. And reading these blogs, everyone (well, at least the overwhelming majority of who I read) seems to have smiling pictures of babies and beautiful round bellies, and well, honestly, it just makes me so goddamn sad and frustrated. That's right, pity party of one, right here.

So not so great and happy or sound over here in San Francisco. Just thought I'd let you all know, in case you were curious.

Thank You and Break

First, thank you all so much for your generous, loving comments. They have been so helpful in keeping me somewhat sane and from losing too much perspective. So thank you, so much.

So I've decided to take a blogging hiatus. I've actually been contemplating this for some time (hence the less frequent posts), and this miscarriage is putting me over that line, apparently.  I need to spend less time focusing on TTC and more time focusing on, well, me,... strange as that may sound.

This miscarriage is breaking my heart. I am still somewhat in shock, but mostly am just so sad and angry. I woke up in the middle of the night last night and the reality of it shook me awake. I just can't believe that I can't carry pregnancies. I wonder of course if there is something wrong with my eggs, or me, or my uterus, and then have to bring myself back down to earth and realize that most miscarriages are just plain shitty luck. Why I had to have such bad luck twice is beyond me. I am horrified that I've miscarried twice. So much so, that I'm considering not counting the first one, b/c it was so early. Sounds good, right? The sadness is in feeling like this is never, ever going to work for me. I'm sad and angry that my body is deceiving me, that I can't trust that this will ever work, b/c I am at a 100% failure rate right now. I am so sad that my oldest friend, who just came to visit, is 3 months pregnant and we were so looking forward to having babies together. I am devastated simply that this baby is no more. I am just so scared for the future, and am pissed that I will be so on edge with any future pregnancies. All these feelings. I am trying to keep it together, but sometimes am not so successful.
That doesn't mean we are going to give up. Chefy and I are planning on switching donors and starting again as soon as we think we're able. I haven't given up hope that I will be able to carry a pregnancy to term. I can't give up that hope. Right now it seems impossible, but I would love to prove myself wrong.

Please know that you all will be in my thoughts, especially those of you whom I am lucky to know IRL. Thank you again for all the love and support. It just makes this whole horrific thing a little easier.

Much love and luck,
Libberal

How do you title a miscarriage?

We got back from our first u/s about an hour ago. The midwife didn't find a heartbeat, or a sack. There was a small fetus, which is measuring only 6 weeks. It's a strange thing to slowly watch your worst nightmare come true, as cliche as that sounds. I am still in shock. I can't believe it's happening again. I have been feeling so pregnant, and as I said that to the midwife, she replied, "it's because you were."

I'm going back in on Monday to have another u/s to make sure, and then will have to decide if I want a D&C, or if I want to take something to miscarry at home. I'm not sure which option I'm going to choose. I guess I have the weekend to decide, if I don't start bleeding before then. Do you all have any plus/minuses for either?

I don't want to do anything. I want to die. I want to change my name, fly to Bali, and never return. I can't believe I have to go through all of this again.

7.11.2010

Update, schmupdate

Busy times around our house lately. Chefy, PooMan and I managed to escape to Mt. Shasta for four days of camping. We stayed at a campground on a small mountain lake and got very dirty running around, making campfires, hiking, eating, and generally having a grand time. Here are some pics:

Please disregard awkwardly large sunhat and focus on cute stepson and gorgeous Lake Shasta.
We are all a bit dorky. It's what keeps us entertained as a family.

We had a great time. I must admit, I did diva-it up a little when we first got there. My wife was confused. What happened to that girl I married who spent 2 weeks in the boundary waters and has gone snow camping, for god's sake? I guess that being newly rated PG and still feeling a bit uneasy (for a lack of a better word) about it, and being in the middle of the woods with no comforts of home brought out my Mariah Carey side. After the first day, I managed to put Mariah back on her shelf (where she prefers to be, actually) and let myself have a good time.

Back at home, we are back to work. This summer will be busy with the expansion of our restaurant. Plans are in their final stages and we have a very long list of details to attend to over the next couple of months. Chefy and I will both be trying hard to balance work, summer, PooMan, and this new pregnancy this season. Good times.

Speaking of new pregnancy, things in that department seem to be progressing, as far as I can tell. Every day I think haven't gotten my period......must be pregnant still. JK. I am not having any serious nausea, but there are plenty of other signs my body is cluing me in on to let me know something is up. Simply for my own prosperity, here are my symptoms thus far:

  • Fatigue. I get tired just thinking about doing something strenuous. Like making a bowl of cereal.
  • Bloat. This one has now become my bff. What would I do without eating one cracker and then watching my stomach expand as if I've just eating the entire box? It's a sight that never fails to enthrall.
  • Constipation. Yes, we all know this is TMI, but F that. Things have just....s..l....o....w..e....d  d.....o....w.....n.
  • Backache. Upper, lower....it likes to surprise me.
  • Cramps. Expand uterus, expand!
  • Playing the pee game. My toilet and I, and in fact toilets all over California, are becoming my bff's. Move over bloat.
  • Alien breasts.....with emphasis on "alien."
  • Insomnia. Not sleeping b/c you're having really crazy intense dreams about the kid you were pen pals with in second grade= awesome.
  • Queasiness. No full-blown nausea, just some randomly unsettling stomach flips. Ick
  • Dizziness. This is the fun one. Whoopee!
So I'm thinking so far, it's still in there- blood circulating, cells dividing, organs forming. Extremely strange, if you really stop and think about it. In the restaurant today there was a new baby girl (just one of many, really), but looking at her, the realization that in less than a year I could be taking care of a new baby just sent me spinning. What an idea. I want to write more about what that may feel like but right now just feel still to anxious to do so. Maybe in another post, sometime in the future. For now, our first ultrasound will be July 21, just 10 days away. I will be 8.5 ish weeks pregnant then. Part of me thinks that I'll lay down on that bed, put my legs up and have the midwife search for hours for the imaginary baby I've been making up these past couple of weeks. Sigh. Let's hope this is not the case.

Oh! And many many many many many congratulations and well wishes to Bao in the Oven for the birth of their baby girl! Congrats ladies!!!! Chefy saw the picture of the new baby and lost it. Only, of course, after I did. Kudos!!

Rated PG

It's the last day of June. We are all now heading into the serious months of summer. I'm ready for it. Bring on the camp stoves, the tennis rackets, the sunblock, the badminton set, the beach chairs, the ridiculously large sunhats, the blankets for watching fireworks, the coolers filled with beer (just for the effect, of course) the RVs, the moldy smelling tents....everything! Summer is here, and I am ready.

And as of this posting, I am still pregnant. There is so much to share about what's happened in the last couple of weeks that I've been wanting to write about. Let's see how I tackle it.

I have never been this pregnant before. In fact, I am now an entire week more pregnant than I ever have been. This feels monumental to me. Not to be dramatic about it, but there is still a large mental block I am having about the foreseeable success of this pregnancy, one that keeps me from imagining this pregnancy to continue past the current day. Heck, past the current moment. A part of me is really still waiting to see that dreaded blood. That feeling is the only one I have associated with being pregnant...that dread and anxiety. So obviously that is still sitting here with me, keeping me from the all-out celebration that I think everyone who is newly pregnant wants to enjoy. But.
Another part of me is kind of getting used to the idea of being pregnant..........for a while at least. Every time I don't see blood, every time I feel those painful twinges in my breasts, those mild cramps in my stomach, that dizziness in the morning, every time I feel one of those extraordinary feelings, I think...."yeah. I am pregnant."
So this is me...vacillating between that anxiety and calm acceptance. I am somewhere in the middle, swinging on a long rope between the two, hoping I land on both feet.

So far there have been so many aspects of this pregnancy, compared to the last, which are just so much more positive. Firstly, going to the clinic to get those betas was phenomenally positive. All of the women who work in the clinic were congratulatory and celebrating along with me. When I got my first positive hpt the first time, I stayed at home and waited to miscarry, at my OB's suggestion. This time I learned and became much more proactive. I demanded beta tests. I demanded to know that this pregnancy was not on its' way out. Standing up for myself and my needs, even if my OB didn't endorse it, was so validating and just nice. It really set a great tone for my self-confidence around this early stage. (the beta #'s didn't hurt, either).

Secondly, being able to see my acupuncturist during this very early stage has been tremendously positive as well. During my first (shortest ever) pregnancy, she happened to be on vacation, and I didn't see her the entire two weeks I was going through that hell. To take her the first positive hpt (I did, don't laugh. I had gotten it that morning, and was crazily excited), and to have her tell me "yup, that's positive, congrats" was so validating. Seeing her for the last two weeks and being able to talk with her specifically about symptoms, diet, herbs, etc...has been so great. The fact that she is in her third trimester hasn't hurt. She's got some very recent advice about the first trimester. Good stuff.

Also, like I said in my previous post, there's something about this time that does feel different. My symptoms are different, my body feels different, and there is that small piece of calm inside that knows my body is doing its best to maintain and push this pregnancy along, instead of out. I guess just having that feeling that you're body is in this with you is the difference this time around. Whatever that is or wherever that feeling comes from, I don't know. All I know is that it helps keep my anxiety at bay and stabilizes my soul, keeping my smiling.

So that's where my body and I are at. Swinging calmly......waiting it out. Each day I'm still pregnant feels like I've climbed Mt. Everest. I only hope I get to keep that feeling around, for another 8 or so months. Chefy keeps telling me I'm "rated PG." I hope I get to keep that title.

Numero dos

Our second beta for 17dpo is........

822!

That gives us a doubling time of 35 hours. I'm feeling pretty pregnant today, with that number. What a crazy time. This weekend is Pride here in SF, so I'm going to put my pink boa on, head out to the park for dyke march, and celebrate my 822 with the collective family. Happy Pride everyone!

6.23.2010

Beta Numero Uno

Is......

323.

I feel like this is a solid start. I am still proceeding with cautiuos optimism until #2 on Friday. Here's to a big increase for #2!

Good Day

Today was a good day. Yesterday was also a good day. Friday was perhaps the best day of all because I felt very un-pregnant, took a test to make sure and surprise surprise, it was positive. These are from the last three days:

Currently, I am pregnant.

So far, things are as good as I can hope for this early. There has been no spotting at all, which makes me want to flail on my knees and thank a god I don't believe in. Last time I was pregnant, I was already spotting at this point, so let's keep up the hope that that spotting just feels completely unwelcome this time around and doesn't dare to show her red face.

Other than that, I have felt dizzy, queasy on and off, and crampy for the last few days. Ta-ta's are still winning in the size and sensitivity categories, and my back has taken a close second to my breasts in the pain division. Cautious optimism is my moto at this particular point. I get my first beta on Wednesday and the second on Friday. There's something different this time, too. Maybe it's just the lack of spotting, but I feel like things are going to be okay, somehow. For right now, I am pregnant. I am thrilled, surprised, and taken aback at how blessed Chefy and I have been, miscarriage and all.

6.17.2010

Who signed me up for this? And where are the donuts?

Ever have those days where you feel like a 6 yr-old who just lost a Hungry Hippo game? The feeling just makes you want to throw your arms tight to your sides, open your mouth as wide as it can open, and scream like a banshee. This, not surprisingly, is how I'm feeling this morning after I woke up to a large temperature drop (see tab on right). Now, I know that this sign isn't the end all, but my temperature took a significant nosedive right before I miscarried, so the emotional impact that drop has on me is still fresh in my mind. I'm sure I will be able to deal with the disappointment of this cycle not working, I'm just not sure about how well I will deal with it. In fact, I don't think I'll be dealing with it well at all. There is no logical reason that this cycle shouldn't work out; the timing was good, the lining and my follie looked good, I've gotten almost pregnant with this donor before......

I guess I'm preparing myself for the fact that sometimes it just doesn't work. Added to that the building resentment I've been feeling about all the f*in work, money and energy we dykes have to invest in order to be successful at a process which comes naturally for so many others. I guess I'm feeling a little hopeless and pissed this morning. Maybe I should treat myself to a decaf latte and hope that takes the edge off. What?!?!?! Who have I become? Decaf latte? Oy vey.

Tales Of A Mindless Bloat

Ugh.
Ugh, ugh, ugh.
Sigh.
Adjust bra.
Sigh heavier.
Unzip jeans.
Stick out tongue and say uuuggggh.

Progesterone is f&*#@ing my shit up! I am crazy woman! I am a new super-hero called SUPER BLOAT! My boobs and stomach are so heavy all I can do it try to fly high over your neighborhood to save whatever-it-is-that-needs-saving, but I am so bulging and awkward all I do is hit fence posts repeatedly on my upward trajectory. Boink, boink. I'm so puffy that I'm having trouble typing this. No joke. Sausage fingers. Jimmy Dean toes. Thanks progesterone, you piece of poo.

And talk about the exhaustion. I couldn't even get up off the couch for the first two days. I sat on the couch and cried- literally at Hallmark commercials- all day. I cried my eyes out and then yelled at the garbage for needing to be taken out. I have become that bloated crazy bitch who lives down the hall. That woman is me. She and I are one and the same.

My sh*&t is whacked. My body is no longer mine. It is out of my control. I try to listen to my wife as she calmly explains to me how Hormones Cause Emotions, but I will have none of that. I am too exhausted and lumpy to understand the words coming out of her smirking mouth. Whaaaa? Whoooo? I can't understand your mouth, my eyelids are too swollen to see, and I don't get what you're saying because I just watched that show about a woman who gave birth in a toilet because she didn't know she was pregnant and I was sad and confused, and then there was a hallmark commercial for Father's Day and now I can't stop crying, and my boobs feel like blimps that are filled with sand.........and so on and so on.

Someone help me please. All this and I'm not even Pregnant yet. I have to go now and take all my clothes off and lie down to cry some more. I have 8 more days. FML.

Keep your fingers crossed, but not your legs...

....Says my wise mother. Noted, darling mother of mine. Noted.  This pic is from yesterday on the way home from the clinic- feet up on the ceiling of the car.

Our insems yesterday went swimmingly. We woke early, got a positive on our trusty little OPK, did an at-home with two ICI vials at 6:30am, and then an IUI at the clinic at 4:00 in the afternoon. Are you getting bored with the details of this baby-making operation? I am.....

Let's work this out in bullets, shall we? That way I will spare you my inattentive blogging style, and you can scan for the juicy tidbits...

Try #3, or "Third Times a Charm"
  • ICI at home was excellent. Spent 6 hours laying on couch afterward, working very hard to get pregnant.
  • IUI was also fabulous. We got a new OB this time, who is also(!) a lesbian mom with two kids. Seriously, it's like the lesbian mafia at this clinic. It's awesome. She told us it took her 8 cycles to get pregnant the first time. She was very open and funny, and chatted easily and honestly with us the entire time. If only I had dyke friends like that my age in this city..but that is another post for another time.
  • One of the first things she did when she came in was to say.."Hey! You wanna look at your follicles and see how they're doin?" I'm all....YES! It was great. My lining, according to her, is nice and juicy at 1.21cm. I had several follicles on my right side, with one huge one that measured at 2.64cm. I'm still ignorant of these measurements...I feel like the lining number was good, but what about the follie? Anyway, it was great to be able to see what the hell is going on up there, firsthand. Thrilling, even. I even got two little pictures to take home with me.
  • I'm fairly sure I O'd yesterday as well, as my temp shot up .8 degrees this morning. Here's to hoping.
  • Went to acupuncture yesterday at 6pm, 2 hours after the IUI
  • Feeling fairly confident about the timing this cycle, let's hope the egg was good!
  • Other than that, ta-ta's are still sore, mood is crabby yet hopeful, and wife is ready for me to be pregnant. This cycle she has become an expert at the speculum (metal upgrade is a godsend), and has been able to find my cervix quickly and easily. She's kinda into it. So cute, and kind of weirdly hot. Again, another post for another time...
  • I'm ready for this TWW, but know I will need some distractions. Give me a couple days to work a good questionnaire out.....

Well Hello There

Time for some NYC pics!
New York as seen from the Empire State Building. Drizzly May morning.
Chicken dumpling's from Anita Lo's dumpling truck. We saw her the next day huffing and puffing her bike over the Brooklyn Bridge. Very exciting for my wife (it's a dyke Asian chef thing). These were VERY TASTY. This day we also had a frankfurter from Grey's Papaya (the coconut champagne drink was awesome), and bagels, lox, whitefish salad, and smoked sablefish for breakfast. YUM! Dinner that night was at Colicchio's Craft. The Hen-of-the-woods mushrooms were to die for!
Me in front of Stonewall. Reminder to self: ask wife to take picture of you standing in front of iconic birthplace of the gay rights movement BEFORE she's had three cocktails. Gotta love her. We had a good night that night, met the building owner's son, who was crazy, and danced with a bunch of  fabulous queens in the small room above the bar. What a night!
Same night :)
Margarita pizza at Lombardi's in Little Italy. This was good, but not as good as the slice we had at Joe's on the lower east side. That day we also had amazing yuca, plantains, and pork shoulder at Boca Chica, and the MOST INCREDIBLE soft serve ever: Cinnamon Bun soft serve at Momofuku Milk in the lower east side. The next day we also dined at another Momofuku, this time in the noodle bar. We had softshell crab noodles, kimchee tamales, and a two-minute egg. That Momofuku mogul knows what he's doing. Also notable was the three(!) pasta course dinner we had at Batali's restaurant, Lupa. I know there are also amazing things we had to eat, but it's hard to remember it all. If you walk away from this blog knowing one thing about eating in New York, it's that you must, must go to Momofuku Milk and try some of that soft serve. If you live in the vicinity, please go now and ship me some overnight in the mail. I will love you forever. :)
Rueben at Carnegie's deli late night. This place had a really strange vibe to it. And all the old-skool Jewish deli food is new to me, so this was an experience. The seven pickles they put in front of us when we sat down were a good sign, though. This pastrami is unlike anything I have every eaten. It was perfectly salty and as large as my head.
 Sappho at the Met. Gorgeous.

All in all we had an amazing time. It was the best distraction from myself that I could think of. And now it's back to reality, back to the restaurant and taking my temperature, to buying six hundred pounds of groceries every day, to feeding my weird cats and loving my little family.

CD 1 (almost), and Take 3

Literally on the plane home this morning from NYC, I started spotting. Not surprising at all and in fact more of a relief than anything that we get to try again, and this time we're (and by we I mean I) am going to take a more laid-back approach to this round. No rushing, no pushing the timing...just letting things happen (um.....OPKCOUGH) naturally.  So not horrible news, just expected AF rollin into town.

On a more exciting note, NYC was incredible!!! Chefy and I ate, drank (!) and meandered about that beautiful, illustrious metropolis, soaking in every second. More pictures and story to come. In the meantime, hopefully everyone's week is going well and apologies for being a bit absent. Much more thrilling and upbeat post to follow...

Big Apple, baby

I'm 4 or 5 days into my tww and here are my symptoms.......................................................
Haha. I have to laugh at myself for this cycle, so that I don't get *too* pissed about throwing $1,100 away. :) Seriously though, there's about a %.01 chance that I might be pregnant, which in a strange way works out well, because Chefy and I are spending next week in NYC!! I have never been, so I am planning on forgetting completely about babies, motherhood, ttc, sperm, inseminations, timing....absolutely ANYTHING that reminds me of ttc is off the table. I can't wait!
Thank you, as well, for your opinions about progesterone, but I've decided not to take it this time around. Instead of dealing with symptoms, I just want to enjoy my time in the big apple, and not spend a minute thinking about whether or not I'm pregnant. I am on vacation from myself, in other words. Doesn't that sound fantastic?

Post-post

Aaaaahhhh, to be done shooting sperm up your vagina and have a moment to reflect (dramatic sigh). Let's reflect on this last week, shall we?

Monday: Sperm arrives a day early-thus the insemination gears in my head start shifting-WAY too early.
Tuesday: I got nuthin
Wednesday: Eggwhite CM, cervix looks open, nothing on OPK.
Thursday: CD 16, no eggwhite, but cervix still looks open ?!(she has been harder and harder to find lately), decide to do IUI with OB. Lie to OB and tell her we got a positive OPK that morning. Feel bad about lying, especially when she has trouble putting the catheter in and has to tilt (ouch!!!) my uterus to get the deed done. Payback is painful.
Friday: Still nothing on OPK, we insem at home. Decide not to look at cervix or CM, as to prevent further disappointment and confusion.
Saturday: Sitting at breakfast and feel nice gush. Take OPK on a whim and there she is, a line as big and dark and fat as a juicy blackberry about to fall off the vine.

Patience= a virtue. Libby= impatient as they come. Pregnancy this cycle= improbable. What I HAVE taken away is a vital lesson, which is:

When your sperm comes early and your ovulation late, don't be impatient!!!! LOL. What can ya do? We're feeling silly and kinda stupid about jumping the gun over here in Chez Libby, but at least we can laugh a little at ourselves. Here's to this being a learning experience!

Also, I've posted my FF charts over on the sidebar there in case anyone is interested.
Have a great Mother's Day, all you mom's and future mom's to be!!

OH! And can you please give me your vote?! Should I take the progesterone,  yay or nay>?

They say timing is everything....

And damned if they weren't right. I hate it when they're right!!!! :)

Last time we did this insemination timing dance, we had it sooo easy. I got a faint positive on my OPK, the sperm arrived an hour later and we inseminated that night at home. Early the next morning the OPK turned positive and off to the doctor's we went to do the IUI. That entire 20 hours I had full ferning, a wide open cervix and plenty of eggwhite CM. What a dream situation.

This is so NOT how this time around is going. Things aren't lining up in quite the same way as they did back in what I will now refer to as "the perfect cycle." Talk about confusing. Yesterday I had eggwhite CM, but my cervix wasn't as open and I got nothing on my OPK. Today my cervix is a wide open town, but my CM is scarce and I STILL don't see a thing on that  stupid piece of crap OPK. I haven't had full ferning for any of the past few days, just some scant ferning here and there for the past four, and today- nothing. So I've been a bit confused, and am trying to stay calm to just focus on what my body is trying to tell me.

This morning Chefy and I had a conversation and decided to go into the OB this afternoon for the IUI. Then I think we'll inseminate at home tomorrow morning and spend the rest of the month crossing our fingers. We'll see what happens. Send some positive fertilization thoughts our way!

4.29.2010

If at first you do not succeed...

CD 9 and I'm getting geared up and ready for this next try. I haven't started OPK's yet, but am checking my cervix, watching my CM, taking all my (freakin) supplements, and have ordered the sperm for delivery for next Tuesday, which will be CD 14. Can I tell you that I am SO looking forward to lugging that huge tank into the teeny tiny waiting room chock-filled with enormously pregnant women at my OB's office? Yeah. Good times. Nothing like a liquid nitrogen tank sitting between two women holding hands with huge beaming smiles on their faces that screams "We're here to get knocked up!" Also fun is accepting the tank from our front desk guy in our building. Hey, guess what we're going to do upstairs with this thing?!!? Sigh.

So the plan is basically the same as last time. I'm looking for a faint positive (will probs happen somewhere b/w CD15 and 16) at which time we'll do the at-home insem (with lots of love and probably some orgasm(s)). Then we wait until the OPK really turns positive, and we head to the OB to sit with our baby-tank in that nerve-wracking waiting room. OR I don't wait until it turns positive and go if all my other signs are telling me to. We'll see. I went back and forth about doing three insems this time around (2 at home and 1 IUI), just to cover all my bases, but figure if two worked enough to get me pregnant last time, hopefully it will work this time. If not, then three next cycle it is.

Emotionally, things are excellent. I have to tell you readers, that I had the BEST time with Ruby and Rose during their short visit here. Now.. I have known Rose for some time, and so it was wonderful to see her again after a few years, catch up, talk about the old days, and just see her lovely face. But. I also have to tell you how incredibly rewarding and informative and generally all-around amazing it was to meet Ruby (who is so chill and lovely) in person to talk shop about this whole blogland we semi-live in, our TTC processes, and what the future holds for us. It was like I had known her for years, through all we knew about each others' intimate lives. I will admit that I was initially a wee nervous about meeting Ruby, as when we both discovered we knew Rose, I was pregnant and she was not. Now quite the opposite is true, and I had a fleeting moment of panic where I thought it would be difficult. But. That was not at all the case, and instead of feeling weird or sad about my situation, I felt completely at peace with my own non-pregnant state and completely thrilled for Ruby's. We had a great time just getting to know one another, and talking through the entirely crazy world that lesbian TTC can be and is most times. And today's u/s news totally made my week. I could not be happier for my old friend, her new wife, and the wee dragon. Kudos!

So that's what's happening here. Probably CD11 I'll start OPK's, and we'll go from there. I am feeling great about this cycle and am just appreciative of being able to get back in the game and have all the excitement and anticipation that I had the first time around. Wish me luck!

Oh! And added bonus- Ruby totally flew her extra Evil P all the way from her native land to lil 'ol me, for my upcoming cycle. How awesome is that? Thanks again, Rubes!

4.21.2010

CD1, Take 2.

AF is back in the house, our month out is over, and Chefy and I are ready for round two to commence!  I am excited, thrilled, and open to cycle number two. Let's hope this time it takes and stays. As an added bonus, I get to see my old friend Rose of this lovely couple, and meet her awesome (and newly pregnant) wife Ruby, as they are visiting SF the next couple of days. What a cool way to bring in a new cycle. Can't wait ladies!

Family Cures All

I'm currently sitting at my parents' kitchen table while they are at church with my grandmother. (my atheism is my father's only dissapointment with me lol..) and I have to tell you, there is nothing like spending a few days with my family to get me right in the head after what' been going on in TTC land.

I have spent the last three days processing this whole experience with both of them. From cycle details, to cervix and insemination talk (with mom only), to talking about the donor, to all of us talking hopefully about the next time I get pregnant...it's been a great way for me to heal and be able to think positively about starting to try again.

So I feel ready. I've O'd while I'm here, so a month from now we can try again. Until then, I'm going to enjoy my wife and take comfort that I did get pregnant on my first try. whoo hoo!

4.03.2010

3 Things

One. I am talking with my oldest friend a few days ago and mentioned the m/c. (we are close, and I knew she would put a realistic yet positive spin on it. Did she ever.) She says.. "didn't I tell you..." and proceeds to fill me in on the fact that a couple months ago her period was a week late (she is very regular), and that she took a hpt that day and it was negative. That night she started her period, which was abnormaly crampy, abnormaly heavy, and with abnormal tissue. Hm. Realizing we have been through the same thing, she offers no apology to me (an act of which I am not only not offended, but relieved) and says...."sometimes I think it just takes a woman's body a couple of times to make it stick." Fascinating theory, indeed. Did I mention that she's a biologist? Gotta love some old friend wisdom sometimes.

Two. Spring is here, and it is lovely. Got out of the house today for the first time in what felt like a thousand years. My body is now officially in love with sunshine and fresh air, and over feeling like crap.

Three. I am leaving on a fabulous distraction of a trip. First to Chicago for two days to see my siblings, and then back to my homeland, Iowa, for some parent-love. I will eat my weight in corn-fed beef, spring garden veggies, and ballpark franks while there. Can't wait. Ooh. And some deep dish.

PS. I am so crazy happy for all the bfp's around this place lately. Congrats ladies and partners of ladies. This makes me wanna get up and dance my pants off. Maybe I will. Kudos!

3.30.2010

In leiu of

eating my weight in sugar, I thought I would add my tagged self to this sugar doll bit. I think MamaK and Pom tagged me, so thanks ladeeez. Here's my ten.

1. I am not a long-term, life-planner, at all. My entire life's theory has been "let's see where this takes me..." and so far it's taken me to some fairly incredible places.

2. I tend to befriend some truly talented and motivated peeps. My oldest friend just biked 950 miles of southern NZ, and my college roommate has climbed the seven peaks, and is about to do a six month triatholon-thingy. You might think this could motivate me to some personal jaw-dropping aspirations, but I am more of a "sidelines" kinda girl. As long as I have some good lovin, good food, and good company...that's right. I'm good.

3. I lived in Mysore, India for six months in my early twenties, and shaved my head there. All the locals thought I was a mourning widow. "So sad," they would say to me.. "at such a young age!"

4. I poison computers. When I touch them, their internal wiring starts to melt and morph, causing crashes and unexplainable breakdowns. I am amazed that I am still blogging and such, at this point.

5. I know only half of my genetic makeup. My mother was adopted and has no inkling to know her birth family. Therefore, my dark eyed and olive skinned self looks not much like my father's English and German blonde side of the family.

6. I have helped at least 5 kids to not drown in my 4 years as a lifegaurd, in both in pools and rivers.

7. I sang in a children's chorus as a tween and won some major international choir competitions. I still love choral music and totally take after my father in that way. (he's the state fair whistling champ).

8. I loathe small talk and hate fake people.

9. I had a sister who was born and died on my second birthday.

10. I am completely confused about the culinary popularity of offal. If I never have to eat anything with liver or blood or stomach lining in it for the rest of my life, I will die happy. (this is difficult to admit, as I'm married to a chef and it's one of their "chef" things...)

11. I just stopped bleeding. 7 days of full bleeding=not fun. But emotionally I am feeling so much better. As Puffer so brilliantly put it- that was a bad egg I had in there. Who the hell wants a bad egg? Not me, thanks anyway. :)  Moving on...

3.26.2010

Fuck Miscarriage.

I went through at least four different possible post titles, and decided on the most authentic to how I'm feeling lately. Not kitschy, but unique just the same.

Things here in Chez Libs have been a wee bit sad, a wee bit tragic, and yet not without a wee bit of hope. I actually am still up in the air about whether or not to keep blogging for the time being, so if this ends up being posted then, well...yay I guess. Maybe that's a step forward for me.

So the miscarriage. Or, as my OB referred to it, "early pregnancy failure." Chefy has been making bad jokes about the EPF that I've had. They're horrible (the jokes), but make me feel better. So. My m/c was awful. It was bloody and sad and emotionally (but not physically) painful. I have gone back and forth on writing about the physical details of the m/c, because I think (as someone who is now in this category of Woman Who Has Miscarried) it is important to read about the actual physical part of passing a pregnancy, but am caught on how writing descriptively about it will help me heal. In that respect, I think I'll focus on how things went down emotionally, and just say I don't think there's any way a woman could physically prepare to pass her own ended pregnancy. It was hard.

Last week there I was, happily stunned by my pregnancy. I had had early spotting, but on Fri and Sat, it went away! The clouds parted, the birds chirped, and things were all right in the world. Then Sunday morning, my BBT dropped suddenly, about a whole degree. Crazy. I took a hpt to make sure it was still positive, and it was. Little did I know this was the beginning of the end. From there, the spotting just gradually got worse, moving from one or two small pink spots every hour to large red-ish puddles every time I went to the bathroom. I knew something was going on, and I was then in an intense state of stress and panic. Yet, there was nothing I could do. Talk about infuriating.
By late Tuesday morning, I was full-on bleeding and made Chefy go buy some more hpt's, both of which turned out to be negative. As quickly as we had become so elated, we both jumped into the misery pool and started then, I think, to try not to drown.

And now it is Friday. I am still bleeding at a medium level. I am also feeling better. I have had some amazing support from many people in my life. Chefy has been with me the entire time, holding my hand, crying with me, reminding me of all the positive things there are to be positive about. We went to see my OB on Wednesday, and she was very supportive and helpful..mentioning that we were lucky to get pregnant on the first try, and that this proves that at least one of my tubes is good to go. We talked about progesterone, and she is sending me a scrip and some information. She was apologetic and caring, and took the time to really listen to our questions. Good stuff. My acupuncturist (who is pregnant!!!!) I hadn't seen for two weeks. She put me on some herbs to increase my blood flow and strength and gave me lots of compassionate care. Just being there and telling her the entire story made me so sad...I didn't even have enough emotional energy to ask her about her pregnancy. It just didn't seem like the right time.
I have been talking with my mom, who is endlessly supportive and loving, and have been emailing some fellow bloggers who have shared their experiences with me (thank you Justine), and basically been all-around stellar listeners and caring souls. Thank you. And all the love I've felt from your comments, fellow bloggers, has just really helped me get through these last couple of days. So thank you too.

I have been through a lot in the last week. I might even venture to say that it's been one of, if not the most difficult week of my life. I am still reeling from the fact that I even was pregnant, even if it was on that list of "world's shortest pregnancies." Did someone earlier mention there would be prizes awarded for this honor? A girl can hope...
In all the sadness and simple horror of knowing that you were pregnant and now you are not, I have managed to keep it positive. And real, I hope. I am still impressed with myself for getting pregnant at all. I need to remind myself that that is something to celebrate (patting self on back). So even if it didn't take...it still happened. It was real. And if it happened once, hopefully I can make it happen again. I am thankful to myself for that gift.

I feel so blessed in other ways...this whole experience has helped put things into perspective (I know..such a cheesy thing to say) but it's true. I need to know that if I am meant to be a mother to a child, it will all come in due time. I am lucky in all kinds of ways...it's important now for me to live in that feeling, and not be pulled down by the sadness of losing a pregnancy.

One very real positive thing that has come out of this is that it's made Chefy and I much closer. It's hard to explain exactly, as I knew I wanted to have children with her for a while now...just going through this has solidified that for me. I can't wait to be a parent with her, to have a family. It's all gonna be good. Shoot.

So ultimately, things aren't the hellhole I had expected. (Can I get an Amen!) Ok, so I was pregnant and it didn't work. That baby wasn't meant to be in this world, and probably for good reason. I know now that I am capable of getting pregnant, and have been given the opportunity to work on my patience levels by waiting it out until it happens again. I feel like I know I will be okay. Life will continue on, and one day things will work themselves out. What more can I ask for?

3.23.2010

.

update 12 hours later.

period starting. two different pregnancy tests are negative. pregnancy lasted one week.

It was a blessing to become pregnant so quickly. I know that I was incredibly lucky to become pregnant on our first try. It gives me hope that this will work again, sometime in the future.

Right now I feel comforted by the fact that I did everything that I could in the last month to get pregnant and stay pregnant, and that this baby was just not meant to be. I just am so sad.

The Good, The Bad, and The Scaringly Annoying

1 week after our bfp, and here's where we stand.

THE GOOD
  • still pregnant, proved positive by the following;
    • four positive tests
    • no real period
    • tatas as big as houses and as sore as a freshly bee-stung bum
    • back ache
    • crazy dizziness and fatigue. I've gotten entirely exhausted by walking four blocks and need to sit down at destination in order not to pass out.
    • peeing like mad, and feeling like I have to pee, even if I've just walked out of the bathroom
THE BAD
  • mood swings galore (I've begged off mascara finally, as it just is getting ruined every day). I guess this could just go in above said category, but I needed something to put here.
And in a category of its VERY OWN......

THE SCARILY ANNOYING
  • spotting, almost every day. It is pinkish in hue, and mostly keeps itself not in the undies, but only shows it's crappy face when wiping. It varies in amount, one time being a spot the size of a quarter, but mostly stays about dime size or smaller. It managed to go away mostly for two days and today has come back with a vengeance. I will be honest, its making me mad.
I've spoken to my OB, the midwife in the same office who is a friend, and my mother about the spotting, as well as doing hours of my own research both in books and online. I am fully aware that spotting is fairly common in early pregnancy and that it may mean nothing at all, but that it also may be an indication of miscarriage. None of it has been accompanied by severe cramps or pain, but even its presence is leaving me a bit of a wreck. My OB is the least helpful, saying that only time will tell, and we'll just have to wait and see. Gee, thanks. The midwife-friend is lovely, and she's given me good advice about using progesterone (not going to have much of an affect at this late in the game), and has encouraged me to do things that help me RELAX. My mother says I should just stop looking at the toilet paper, which I am starting to seriously consider. Each time I go to the bathroom (approx 20+ times a day), seeing those pink spots makes my heart stop a little each time.

Also necessary to note is that I am still very early along here, only 4w6d. While I don't think I could ever emotionally prepare myself for a miscarriage, I am aware of it's commonality, and not totally unrealistic about the premature state of my pregnancy. In order to cope so far, I have been resting a lot, trying to visualize a healthy embryo, distracting myself, and trying to stay positive. I know that whatever happens, I will be fine. Chefy will be fine, PooMan will be fine, we will all survive and carry on. Its this uncertainty of not knowing the outcome that is leaving me for a loop...

Can i ask those of you out there that have experienced this, what were the circumstances and how did you cope? I am thinking of going to get my hcg numbers, just to somewhat know either way (my first real prenatal appt isn't for 3 weeks). Have any of you had spotting in your first trimester? Just looking for some perspective here....

3.18.2010

Two days later..

And I still haven't wrapped my head around the fact that this is real. I am feeling a lot of things; excited, anxious, elated, nervous and surprised as hell, guilt for having this work so quickly and of course a deep sense of how lucky I am to have it work (so far) so soon. This guilt and surprise is complex. It includes anger and confusion, and to be honest, a bitterness that there are women out there who have been working so hard who I feel deserve this more than me. At this point, I am just trying to understand that yes, I am pregnant, and am trying to take it day by day. The fear of miscarriage is obviously in my mind, but I am trying to focus and visualize the success of the embryo, it keeping calm and carrying on...

I also in a way have been (and this may sound really strange) trying to not think about it too much. I realize that in my life, I have often suffered due to over-thinking things, instead of relaxing and letting things happen as they will. If I really let myself go there with the reality of this, I feel like I might freak out mentally. So. I've been trying to just breathe, stay calm, positive, and relaxed. So far this approach has been working.

Also included in the irony of this whole situation, I am now faced with a pregnancy that I had presumed wouldn't be a reality for approximately another six months! Don't get my wrong, I am in no way complaining or ungrateful for this gift of getting pregnant on the first try. I am simply shocked and feeling a little under-prepared for this, as I assumed it would take a few months at least for this to happen. It's a bit of a shock to realize that while your planning on leisurely trying to get pregnant for six months or so..BAMN you're good to go on your first try. As my friend would say.....crazytown. Now comes all the re-planning of our lives :)

So the story. How has this all gone down in the last couple of weeks. I will keep this short, but hopefully give you the whole story.

About 7 days ago, I noticed that my breasts were feeling particularly sore. Also, I started noticing my lower back on both the right and left sides was aching. I felt these symptoms during the day but they really started hurting at night. By 11DPO, my breasts were so enlarged and sore that I would've had a really hard time explaining those symptoms away if I turned out to not be pregnant. Chefy and i talked about pshycosymatic symptoms, but that seemed like the only way (besides pregnancy) to explain what was happening to my body. I researched early symptoms and a lot of folks tell you that you can't feel much during the first two weeks. I am now a firm believer that YOU MAY KNOW early on if you are having symptoms that you suspect. I'm not going to say I had a women's intuition about being pregnant, my body was simply changing, and it was hard to ignore. Anyway..

So on 12DPO, I took a test in the AM, and it was positive. I've taken three so far, all positive. I still kind of can't believe it. Chefy and I cried and generally freaked out for a while, and then I called my mom at work. She of course freaked out as well. I went to work and when I came home that night I called my dad and the three of us talked (my parents are together). They couldn't be more supportive. My dad is very cautious and kept warning me that it might not work out (my mom lost a baby during birth), which is good to remember. My mother of course was telling him to be quiet and trying all she could to not go on the internet and start buying baby stuff. They are very different in their support, but lovely all the same.

So my parents, one good friend, my OB, and all you amazing friends here are the only people that know so far. I called my OB yesterday and set up an appointment for 8 weeks. She was lovely and encouraging, and told me to take it easy for the next few weeks to let "nature run its course." I will be trying to follow her advice. Both she and my mom (who is a pediatrician) agreed that bloodwork wasn't necessary to confirm pregnancy, and that I shouldn't need to be seen until about 8 weeks.

Chefy has been incredible. She has been taking care of me, feeding me, coddling me, loving me, and just being a wonderful wife. I couldn't have asked for better.

From here I am just going to treasure this experience as it comes, enjoy each day, relax and let my body do its thing, and educate myself as much as I can in the coming weeks.

And of course you bloggers in many ways have been the biggest support for me. I can't thank you enough for all of your happiness and congratulatory messages sent my way. I feel the love, and I am truly thankful for it.

3.16.2010

12 DPO And......

I've had some spotting the last two days. Nothing like my normal pre-AF spotting- this stuff was light pink at first and then darker brown. So. I got worried. Naturally. And what happens when a woman who is trying to get pregnant can't tell if her spotting is from AF or implantation? Also naturally, she takes a hpt. Well I took one last night (3/15) around 6PM and it was negative. Just on a whim (and from my complete lack of patience, who are we kidding) I took one this morning at 9am (3/16) and..........

Craziness, huh? I think I'm still in shock.

I have been spending the day trying not to think about it too much. Chefy cried when I told her and has been walking around with a smile on her face all day. She surprised me when I got home from work with beautiful roses. Aww.

Also in BFP news, the lovely ladies whose blog I've just started reading over at Bang Head Here also got one this am. Talk about post-ides of March!

Will post more later. Am going to stare at wall in continued shock now.

Drive Yourself Crazy; A Useful Guide to Every TTC Womans TWW.

Do the hands on your clock seem to have slowed down dramatically in the last couple of weeks?
Do you find yourself going to bed at 7pm just to hurry up and get to tomorrow?
Have you found you've started speaking in slow tones to yourself when at home/work/out. Are they conversations that go something like this? "Wait. Did my back just hurt just then? I think my right nipple is feeling extra sensitive today. Whoa...I think that my head hurt for a second there." Etc..

If you have, then these are things you SHOULD NOT DO.
1. Take any amount of time off work. Free time is your enemy!
2. Use Google AT ALL. Especially for DPO symptoms.
3. Have your partner habitually feel you up to check the consistency of your tatas (well, this one isn't that bad.)
4. Watch The Miracle of Life on Nova.  (seriously Libby?)
5. Again, please see #2. Add ALL INTERNET, even Fer.tility Foe.
6. Try to conjure up symptoms out of thin air. "I swear I just felt an implantation cramp."

For your mental health and the mental health of others, please refrain from cooing to strangers' babies on the street, leering at pregnant women in public, and goo-goo-ga-ga-ing small children when standing in line at the grocery store.

Things TO DO during TWW.
1. Um...get really good at diverting your attention to um.....something else?

(sliding trumpet) whaaa whaaa whaaaa....I apologize. I have obviously inherited my father's corny sense of humor, and am desperately trying not to google. Thanks for indulging me, bloggers. Love ya!

3.08.2010

Shut the door, keep out the devil

I re-read my last post on our first two insems, and I feel silly. Not for my wishful thinking, but for all the confidence I portrayed. Silly Libby, how over eager you were. Don't get me wrong, I still think our timing was okay (we will find out soon enough, now won't we), but I have to admit that the 2 days following our second insem (which was in the morning), my temperature didn't go up to confirm ovulation, it WENT DOWN. FOR TWO DAYS. Craptastic. Shitballs. Fuckville. Only on CD 17 did it spike up 1.3 degrees, two full days after the last insem. That's 48 whole hours. So. What can you do? Nothing, absolutely nada. There you have it.

One of the few consolations I have is that now this is completely out of my hands. What a huge relief to know that you have done everything you can in order to make those crazy sperm meet your beautiful full egg, and once those insems are done, all you have to do it sit back, relax, and think good thoughts. This alone makes me feel happy. Oh, and the idea that if this doesn't work...I get to have a glass of wine (!) at some point. So it's either wine or pregnant. Either way I figure I'm winning.

I am passing the TWW so far, fairly easily. We've been crazy busy at work, which keeps me distracted, and PooMan's 9th birthday is this week, so we're busy with those celebrations. I have been of course kind of obsessing about listening to each and every twinge my body lets me in on. These have amounted to a fair amount of back pain in the afternoons and more tender breasts than normal. My lower stomach was a bit crampy for two days after the IUI as well, but I figure that's normal. My dreams are all about sperm and babies and inseminations. My appetite also has gone through the roof, especially at night. Who knows what it all means...maybe I'm just letting myself relax and eat and be comfy during this time in order to prepare myself for whatever happens. Either way we will know in about 9 days, and thank you lovely bloggers for all your messages of luck and well wishes. Your encouragement has meant a lot to me. So much. So thank you.

oh and to explain the title...this is an old spiritual that i sang once in a childrens choir I was in. For some reason it just popped into my head..not sure why but it feels useful now.

We Have Liftoff

It's official. We have started.

Last night: faint positive on OPK. Full ferning on lens. Cervix position is high and soft, with much CM springing forth. First at-home insemination with frozen sperm, 5:20 PM, with lots of resting and positive thinking afterwards.

This morning: Positive OPK. Full ferning on lens. Cervix position is high, soft and TOTALLY WIDE OPEN. First IUI with frozen sample at Dr. Lovely's office, complete with sperm sample viewed in microscope (damn those buggers were swimming, and there were tons!)  at 10.30 AM. Insems are 17 hours apart.

Currently: Resting on couch, eating crackers and cheese and watching documentaries on demand. Chefy and have had a very exciting last 20+ hours. We feel really good about the timing with both insems, and our Dr. Lovely was awesome. She exclaimed that my cervix was open to the size of a large pea, that there was an "awesome" amount of CM, and that the sperm sample was one of the "busiest" she's seen. She was very into showing Chefy everything about the IUI and let her push the plunger. She also gave us a couple nice tips for our next at-home attempt. That, and the price of the IUI was half what I thought it would be!

Overall, while I am keeping my expectations low (12% phooey), I am also lying on this couch allowing myself to visualize a pregnancy taking place right now. As I type. Yes.

Bring on the TWW!

Speculums Gone Wild!!!!!!!!

Leave it to the curious 8 yr old to pick up the ONE new object in the house and ask, "what's this?" as he opens the bills of the speculum wide with his wee fingers. While I attempt to explain, he loses interest and moves on to much more exciting things, like his Ben Ten Alien Stopwatch! Go figure.

Anyway, I have finally gotten around to start looking at my cervix. I know. It's bad. I've been charting for what....eight(!) months now and have JUST started getting serious. Bad me, no cookies.

My cervix (should you all be on the edge of your seats to know) seems to be doing just fine. She sits back there all pink and pretty and kind of winks at me when I shine a light on her. I think she's getting annoyed with the attention. She seems to be saying, "when the hell are you going to get around to actually using me, already, geez." Or something like that. All in due time, dear Cervy...all in due time.

My questions to you cervix experts out there is how can you tell the difference b/w high vs. low and firm vs. soft? My lady seems high and soft all the time, but then again I have only been looking for 6 days. Is it just a question of time to tell the difference? This might seem like a completely obvious question, but I am curious about the answer to that particular question as well as asking how much cervix monitoring has played a part in everyone's insems. Stories, advice, jokes...all responses welcomed. Thanks!

Technicalities

I guess this is a question that I've been meaning to ask for a long time. How many of you out there have read/used/worshiped/hated this book,

and if you have read and used it, what has been valuable to you that has come from this tome? I ask b/c I am using a lot of the insem timing information in the 15th chapter to help time my at-home insem and IUI. Also, I've been following a lot of dietary and supplement suggestions (vitex, fish oil, etc..). What has been relevant or not about this book for ya'll?

Fat Tuesday

We had the best time in NOLA for Mardi Gras. While I didn't get as many food porn pics (sorry Shroe,) I did get some funny pictures of the many, many parades we went to.

Throw me some beads!!

See the kid on top of the ladder behind Chefy.. This is what everyone does there. Puts their children on ladders to catch beads. Fascinatingly weird.

I thought it was strange that most of the caucasian Krewes costumes resembled KKK outfits. Also fascinatingly weird. Especially for a yankee like me.

But enough about deep-seated pseudo racist yet culturally accepted carnival traditions, look at all the pointless plastic I've accumulated!!!!

But really, it was a great time. I am reminded every time we travel south of that old Mason Dixon just how different Louisiana can be. Despite all the fascinating weirdness, Chefy and I had an amazing time. We saw family, partied, ate way too much pork and fried seafood, and generally had a wicked time. But enough fun, let's get back to bizznach.

So all our ducks are officially in a row. After a very unhealthy week, I am back on that pre-preggers wagon and damn does it feel good. I am currently on CD3, and my AF is kicking my ass. Chefy has been telling me my period is "bleeding like it's her last time..." too funny. I've talked with my OB, my acupuncturist, and all systems are go. Now all I have to do is order the sperm and we're live!

In other not so great news, Chefy and I have been arguing a LOT lately. The stress of beginning this crazy important step in our lives is stressing us out, and it sucks. Have any of you folks experienced pre-insemination tribulations? Sigh.

Last Hoo-rah

Mardi Gras Here We Come!!!

Business has been dealt with, packing is done, and we are ready to let off some steam and enjoy a bit of a (hopefully) last crazy adventure pre-TTC. What a better place and time to have some debaucherous adult fun then NOLA post-Saints Superbowl win and Mardi Gras? When we get back it is down to baby business. Until then... Laissez Les Bon Temps Roullez!!

OhPeeKay

I am obsessed. Please help me abate this obsession by telling me your timing experiences with your positive OPK results and your IUI's. This is my four month OPK look-back, as it were.

Nov: +OPK CD 15
Dec: +OPK CD 14+15
Jan: +OPK CD 16
Feb: +OPK CD 17

What the hell day should I think about having my first IUI (next cycle) with these numbers? Any advice?

It's Oh So Quiet

Now that I have approx. one month left until our first attempt at this baby game...all of my (what seemed like) small weird habits have been coming to the surface lately at work. Yes, I have been taking OPK's around my bigO date at work, but its not been until this last month that have I been taking more than one each day. Wait. I'm not giving you, lovely reader, enough of a backstory here.

Chefy and I own a very awesome and very SMALL restaurant that manages (thankfully!) to get extremely busy most times (think 1.5 hour wait on the weekends). That means that Chefy, myself, and the 7 staff we have working on any given day are working in what many might consider very small quarters. These quaint accomodations lead to a kind of necessary intimacy one may not expect from a work environment. Add to this that Chefy and I are the bosses, which means that our staff (and many of the customers on Chefy's part anyway) are watching our every move. This makes it, um, tricky to keep secrets from our staff. We are very familial and close with the people that work for us. This has for me, led to some creative and interesting situations/conversations lately, as of course we are keeping out TTC under wraps. Today was especially challenging interesting.

I lied at least four different times today. Once was about why I am going to accupuncture. Once was about why I was drinking the special tea I brought to work. Once was about why I'm quitting drinking at home. And the fourth was about why I've changed my diet. Thank goodness I'm not bad at lying. At least when it's not important.
But. The most interesting challange that has been brought forth with all this TTC work (cuz let's face it, it is work) is taking my OPK two/three times a day. As mentioned previously, our restaurant is small. I have managed to store my pee cup and a few OPK strips in the shoddy medicine cabinet in the bathroom the customers don't use. I have also managed to use said pee cups sucessfully for a couple months now, but I swear our dishwasher knows something is up. He can hear just about everything that goes on in that bathroom (it's under construction), and he must see me exiting the bathroom cradeling a small stick which I place on a shelf not 2 feet from him and then check again five minutes after going to the bathroom. This guy (our beloved dishwasher), is awesome and smart enough not to mention anything, but I know he knows something is up.  Crazy. I keep wondering if he goes home at night and tells his wife I've been taking pregnancy test every months for the past four months. Who knows??

I know you all may have experienced different levels of secrecy around your TTC process (and about different things), so bring it on. I want to hear about all of the weird, insane, sad, happy, strange, unusual, unpredictable (or not) moments that have risen from all of the things we keep to ourselves during this process. What do we go through in our secret lives? Post in comments or write a post of your own..

Alright Already

Enough lurking, time to post!
I am realizing recently that over the past few months I have made a conscious effort to censor myself and not post as often as I'd like because I haven't "officially" started to get pregnant yet and didn't want to take up space in our wee lesbian TTC blogland. Sitting here I realize that that rationale is total and utter bullsh*t, and that these last months I have been preparing my body to house a babe (hopefully) have TOTALLY been part of my entire TTC journey. What the hell was I thinking?!? Even Chefy read this blog last week (she isn't so into the blogging thing), and told me that she was glad that she'd read it, b/c it helped her understand my pregnancy process. Awww...
Anyway, so now I'm going to stop censoring myself and post whenever I stinkin feel like it. So there.

In recent news, last week I had went to both my acupucturist and OB. The OB and I had our final talk before starting round one the first week in March. I got a pap and we talked details. She's all ready for my call on CD1 to schedule the first IUI, which will not be this next cycle, but the following. Why am I waiting another cycle, you might ask, when I seem so damned prepared? Chefy and I have decided to have a last hurrah before this whole thing starts so we're going to Mardi Gras! This will be my first and Chefy is all excited to show me how crazy and wonderful her hometown can get. I really couldn't imagine being in New Orleans during Mardi Gras and wondering if I am pregnant, so try #1 will just have to wait until early March. I can't wait!  (for both).
Acupuncture is turing out to be my favorite hour of the week. It is so incredibly relaxing and makes me feel like I'm doing something good for myself. Next on my list is to start up yoga again. I've been exercising more, eating a TON more vegetables, and cut out (most) sugar recently (does anyone love greek yogurt with honey like I do?) I also have managed to kind of give up my water-processed decaf for green tea. Good times, good times.
On the donor front (thanks Shroe for asking), Chefy and I have decided on a great Fillipino guy from CCB who is musical and likes to cook gourmet food! He has proven pregnancies and his baby pic is very cute. Everything is in place, now all we have to do is wait approx. 35 more days. Wish me luck!

Babies. And more babies.

It's raining babies! Sending a huge congratulations to both Puffer and Chicken on the arrival of their two newbies, as well as Project Kjetil with their birth! It's wonderful to see all these children who are going to have kick-ass parents and lots of love. Have a great week everyone!

Needles and Whine

I had my very first acupuncture appointment today, which was great. The practitioner specializes in in/fertility issues, and seemed very competent. She took my complete medical history, asked very in-depth questions in regards to my cycle and whatnot, and then looked at my tongue and took my pulse before administering the pins. She talked about how it was good that I was starting acupuncture now, and that while my chances of conceiving every cycle are about 20%, it shouldn't take me long to get pregnant. (I knocked on the wooden armrest of the chair I was sitting in.) Good stuff. BUT.
Right before she started in with the needles, she did mention that there was one little thing that I should do to help out my chances. NO MORE ALCOHOL. Poop. Boo. Big Boo. I have been soooo good with changing my diet, getting rid of caffeine, taking all my supplements and drinking my tea, making sure I get good sleep, yadda yadda yadda....my nightly glass of wine (or two- who are we kidding) has been the last bastion of..well....fun. Oh I am a whiney wee bastard aren't I? I need to just f*in suck it up and deal. I'm going to have to give it up entirely soon (knock knock again), so why not now? Chefy is laughing at me from the other room b/c she says I sound really upset. Haha. Please tell me that I'm being a whiney little snot who needs to suck it up bigtime and take one for the team. Please. Or tell me how ya'll got rid of your vices before/during baby time. I need some inspiration here ladies. Think The Biggest Loser, only for mild alcoholics....

Gross and Awesome

DISCLAIMER: Detailed grossness included in this post. Please read *only* if you're comfy reading about other ladies' CM.

So today is CD16 for me, which for three cycles running is my Positive OPK day. This AM while elegantly and gracefully reaching b/w my legs to pee in a cup (really its a lovely glass votive holder) I noticed the most disgusting, and incredible thing making its way down toward the agua in the bowl. I'm not sure the best way to describe it, but it reminded me of an albino banana slug on a diet. I know. Like I said, gross and awesome.

It was the best, longest, eggwhite-est, CM I've ever seen come out of my body. Seriously disgusting and incredible. I'm not just telling you this to gross you out. I was very impressed and excited by this witnessing. It just was thrilling to see the strange and fascinating things your body will do in order to get you pregnant. Awesome. I can't wait to make good use of that sticky substance come early March.

In donor news, Chefy has been spending the day narrowing her favorite choices down. Let's go baby!
